(IPYS/IFEX) – On 12 July 2006, journalist Antonio Rojas Ramírez, of the newspaper “Ahora”, was accused of defamation by Rider Padilla Sinarahua, mayor of the district of Lagunas, Alto Amazonas province, northeastern Peru. The mayor is asking for 80,000 nuevos soles (approx. US$ 25,000) in damages.
The lawsuit stems from Rojas’s reporting of allegations by the district’s inhabitants that the mayor was buying votes for the upcoming November elections, paying voters to change their places of residence to ones lying within the district.
On 12 October, the journalist made a statement regarding the lawsuit at the First Mixed Court of Alto Amazonas.
