(IPYS/IFEX) – On 6 January 2008, Josse Salazar Mezarina, bodyguard for Luis Lomparte Monteza, the mayor of the town of Casma, threatened to kill journalist Antonio Azalde, editor of the newspaper “El Guerrero” and punched him in the face. Casma is located in the Ancash region of northwestern Peru.
The journalist told IPYS that the attack may be in reprisal for an article published on 6 January about the detention of Salazar Mezarina’s brother-in-law, Wilson Valcázar Piña, accused of selling drugs. According to the police report, the house where the drugs were found belongs to the mayor. The article also mentioned that, many years ago, the mayor, who is a lawyer, defended Valcázar Piña when he was accused of drug trafficking.
Azalde filed a complaint with Casma’s police.
