IAPA condemns discrimination against “La Mañana” newspaper
Miami (April 28, 2004) – The Inter American Press Association’s (IAPA) Committee on Freedom of the Press and Information has expressed concern about discriminatory actions against La Mañana newspaper, in the city of Córdoba, Córdoba province, central Argentina.
In a letter to Córdoba Mayor Luis Juez, Rafael Molina, chairman of IAPA’s Committee on Freedom of the Press and Information, protested a February 2004 order by the Mayor’s Office restricting the provision of information to La Mañana journalists and discriminating against the newspaper in the allocation of government advertising. Molina described the action as an attack on freedom of expression and alluded to a link between the actions of the Mayor’s office and articles the newspaper has published, criticising mismanagement at the local government level.
The letter also noted that the Córdoba Provincial Legislature issued a statement condemning the discrimination against La Mañana and the denial of information to the newspaper.
