(IPYS/IFEX) – On 29 February 2000, Alberto Enrique Pintado, a journalist with Radio Galaxia in Bagua Grande, Department of Amazonas, submitted a report to IPYS about an incident which occurred on 17 February. In the report, the journalist stated that a man who was not wearing a uniform, but claimed to be a member of the Public Relations Office of “Las Brisas” army headquarters in Bagua Grande, showed up at a radio and a television station in that city. The man refused to identify himself or show credentials, but inquired about the identity of the stations’ staff, the names of their programmes and their schedules.
According to Pintado, the “visits” took place at the offices of Galaxia Super Stereo radio station and the Canal Municipal television station, both of which broadcast América Television’s signal at 5:30 and 7:15 p.m. (local time), respectively. At the radio station, the staff refused to provide the information requested. At the local television station they did give him information, and the person from the military went so far as to inquire about the political history, and the family and work situations of Donald Mejía Yoplac, current Somos Perú congressional candidate for the Department of Amazonas.
Despite the fact that in Bagua Grande there are seven radio stations and three television stations, only the two mentioned in the report were visited.
