The offices of the AW Noticias radio station were attacked by an unidentified individual who threw a grenade at the main entrance to the station.
(CEPET/IFEX) – The offices of the AW Noticias radio station, owned by Grupo Multimedios, came under attack on the night of 9 July 2010, in Monterrey, Nuevo León, when an unidentified individual threw a grenade at the main entrance to the station. The grenade did not explode, but it did break the glass in the main entrance.
According to information from Multimedios, the incident took place at 9:50 p.m., when a man got out of a white Volkswagen Pointer and threw the explosive at the entrance to the station’s offices. Apparently, the suspect was accompanied by people who waited for him in the car and aided in the escape. Authorities described the suspect as being 25 years old, medium-build and dressed in denim jeans and a white shirt.
All AW Noticias personnel were evacuated from the offices, which are in the same building as other Multimedios offices and some television studios. Officers from the state’s public safety secretariat (Secretaría de Seguridad Pública del Estado) and the Mexican army arrived at the scene and cordoned off the area.
Ballistics experts and Nuevo León Public Security SWAT officers inspected the explosive, a M-67 fragmentation grenade and discovered that the safety pin had been attached with adhesive tape, which had stopped it from exploding. Later, the army took possession of the explosive for safekeeping.
The day before the attack, army officers detained Esteban Luna, who is assumed to be the leader of the Los Zetas criminal group, which is thought to be responsible for many attacks and forced disappearances of members of the military, as well as an attack on the US consulate in Monterrey, which took place on 12 October 2008.
