After almost three months out of circulation, on the morning of 6 January 2000, the defamatory tabloid “Repudio” reappeared on newspaper and magazine stands. As in previous editions, the tabloid discredits and insults member of Congress and director of “La República” daily Gustavo Mohme Llona.
The latest edition of the tabloid has nine pages, including covering pages and photographs, and uses the same sensationalistic style as earlier to denigrate Mohme, a persistent opponent of Alberto Fujimori’s government. The controversial pamphlet is still appearing as a CM Ediciones publication, edited by Arturo Cáceres, although in this edition the editorial house’s address is not listed.
“Repudio” is not the only tabloid dedicated to attacking Mohme, his newspaper, leaders of the opposition and a number of independent journalists. A number of well known government pamphlets, such as “El Tío”, “El Chino”, “El Chato” and “La Chuchi”, are distributed daily on a national scale. In addition, the “Repúdica” tabloid appeared in May 1999, copying “La República”‘s format and logo. “La Gran Repútica del Sur” was circulated in Puno and more recently, “Solido Norte” appeared in Trujillo and Chiclayo simultaneously (see IFEX alerts). In addition to attacking journalists and politicians opposed to Fujimori’s regime, “Solido Norte” also highlighted and praised the work of government officials in their respective regions.
IPYS further notes that “Repudio”‘s latest appearance coincided with the very day on which the largest march recently organised was held, mainly in Lima but also throughout Peru, to protest the unconstitutionality of President Fujimori opting to stand for re-election a third time.
