“El Sol de Durango” director clarifies information on the “abductions” of three reporters in the Comarca Lagunera region
Mexico, D.F., 14 June 2007 (CENCOS) – In an interview with a reporter from “El Universal” newspaper in Mexico City, “El Sol de Durango” director Joaquín Martínez Garza disavowed statements circulating about the supposed disappearance of three reporters in the Comarca Lagunera region on 7 June 2007, which were disseminated by various media outlets.
This information was confirmed by CENCOS, upon interviewing “El Sol de Durango” information chief Guillermo Carrión, who confirmed the clarification made by newspaper director Mártinez Garza. Carrión also said that there had been an abduction of a reporter from “Noticias de la Laguna” newspaper, but that the reporter did not want to give his name. The only information known was that he was abducted for several hours, beaten, then released. The reporter filed no formal complaint regarding the incident with the authorities.
CENCOS is announcing this development to clarify the information it provided in a previous press release regarding the alleged disappearance of three reporters. CENCOS had based its press release on information which had been disseminated by several media outlets, and which had not been refuted by “El Sol de Durango” when CENCOS contacted the newspaper.
