The cards which accompanied the flowers sent to journalist César Lévano and businessman Arturo Belaúnde, alleged they had been sent by IPYS and the Peruvian Press Council.
(IPYS/IFEX) – On 11 May 2011, journalist César Lévano and businessman Arturo Belaúnde, editor and chairman of the board respectively of the newspaper “La Primera”, which officially supports Ollanta Humala’s presidential candidacy, received funeral wreaths that an unidentified person left in the newspaper’s reception area. The incident occurred in the capital city, Lima. The cards which accompanied the flowers stated that they had been sent by IPYS and the Peruvian Press Council. Both organisations denied their involvement immediately.
Jaime Cruces, “La Primera” general manager, told IPYS that they have filed a formal complaint. In response, police officers went to the paper’s headquarters to confirm the information.
IPYS condemns all types of intimidating actions and threats against the press and demands an immediate investigation of this particular case.
