Jaime Quispe Olano believes the threat is linked to a story published by the paper that implicated a brother of the former head of the Ayacucho government in a blackmail scheme.
(IPYS/IFEX) – On 20 July 2011, journalist Jaime Quispe Olano, editor of the “Jornada de Ayacucho” newspaper, reported that he had received a death threat via a mobile phone call made by an unidentified individual. The incident took place in the Ayacucho region of central Perú.
Quispe believes the threat is linked to an accusation published in the 20 July edition of the newspaper that implicated a brother of the former head of the Ayacucho regional government, Omar Quesada, in a blackmail scheme. According to the article, Rolando Quesada, a.k.a. “Chalo”, who is in prison because of crimes committed with a gang that no longer exists, is exerting pressure on several authorities in an attempt to obtain his release.
Quispe told IPYS he will request protection from the authorities.
