According to MADA's monitoring, the number of media freedom violations in 2010 year will be more than 200.
(MADA/IFEX) – 9 December 2010 – While all humanity will celebrate, on 10 December 2010, the anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which is an important asset to all societies, the Palestinian people still suffer the consequences of occupation.
Palestinians’ human rights are violated every day. The Palestinian internal divide has led to further deterioration of the human rights situation in West Bank and Gaza since mid 2007.
Palestinian journalists are facing continuous violations; last year MADA documented 173 violations against freedom of expression. Ninety-seven of the violations were committed by Israeli occupation forces, and the other 76 were committed by Palestinian security services in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.
According to MADA’s monitoring, the number of media freedom violations this year will be more than 200. This number shows that there is a significant increase in attacks on journalists, which raises more concerns for the safety of journalists and their ability to cover events.
On this occasion, MADA renews its calls for respecting freedom of expression and opinion in the occupied Palestinian territories, which is guaranteed in Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the Palestinian Basic Law. MADA also calls for the immediate release of arrested journalists.
