ONE JOURNALIST KILLED AND OVER 100 ACTS OF AGGRESSION AGAINST THE PRESS IN 2007
One journalist was killed in Peru in 2007; this is the first such killing since 2004. For the fifth consecutive year, the majority of press violations took place in Ancash region and in Lima.
IPYS documented 121 acts of aggression against the press in 2007, up from 96 in 2006, 60 in 2005, and 73 in 2004.
Ancash region (at 27 percent of total violations) and Lima (at 10 percent) remain the areas where, since 2003, the greatest number of violations took place.
As in 2005 and 2006, radio stations were the most frequent target of violations.
Physical aggression (at 38 percent of all violations) and death threats (at 23 percent) were the most common violations. There were also 10 legal cases brought against journalists, and six were convicted of defamation or “insult”.
In terms of censorship, IPYS documented four cases of journalists quitting, or of their programmes being cancelled, to avoid legal action by a public official.
