(PFC/IFEX) – A Hidalgo state legislator has accused a number of journalists who work for state educational institutions of cheating the State Public Education System (Sistema Estatal de Educación Pública, SEPH). Accused are journalists from MVS Comunicaciones, Notimex, Televisa and other media outlets who also work for state educational institutions.
On 29 May 2003, legislator Herlindo Bautista Sánchez, of the Partido Acción Nacional (PAN) political party, presented the legislature with a list of journalists “who receive salaries for work that they do not carry out,” he alleged. He also submitted a document prepared by his colleague Rosa María Martín Barba, in which Hidalgo media outlets are accused of having “sold out” and being “in the service of the government.”
The targeted journalists reject Sánchez’s allegations. They have filed a complaint with State Attorney General Juan Manuel Sepúlveda Fayad, accusing the legislator of insulting them and calling for measures to put an end to the continuous attacks on the Hidalgo media by political party leaders. The journalists also asked legislature chair Fernando Moctezuma Pereda, of the Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI) political party, to ensure that Sánchez is forced to publicly apologise to the journalists and specify on what information he based his accusations.
