(IPYS/IFEX) – On 4 February 2009, Gustavo Magnusson, an Anhanguera Communications Network (Red Anhanguera de Comunicación, RAC) photographer, was detained inside the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God by the church’s pastor and security guards. The pastor and security guards told Magnusson to hand over the photographs he took when part of the church’s roof caved in as 200 parishioners were praying. The incident took place in the town of Campinas, Sao Paulo state.
Magnusson said that he was held by the pastor and security guards for thirty minutes until the media group’s editorial office called the police, who then released the reporter. Magnusson filed a complaint regarding the incident with the police.
The church’s security guards told the chief of police that they detained Magnusson because he was not authorised to enter the church and take photographs.
