The attack on Caretas journalist Américo Zambrano coincides with a judicial harassment campaign against Caretas journalists for publishing several reports against businessman Rodolfo Orellana, investigated for money laundering.
On 29 June 2013, journalist Américo Zambrano, research editor for Lima magazine Caretas, reported that he was attacked by four unidentified persons who approached him and beat him when he was on his way home. This took place in the district of San Miguel, in Peru’s capital.
Zambrano told IPYS that he was walking home when four men got out of a car and attacked him, kicking and punching him as well as insulting him. They also took his iphone.
The journalist ruled out a robbery. The incident coincides with a judicial harassment campaign against Caretas journalists for publishing several reports against businessman Rodolfo Orellana, investigated for money laundering, among other crimes.
Zambrano reported the incident to the police.
A journalist told IPYS that four months ago he was in an informal meeting with a friend when two other people arrived saying they were looking for Zambrano’s address, and were following Rodolfo Orellana’s orders to give him a beating. The journalist preferred not to reveal his identity, but will be summoned by the police as part of the investigation into the case.
IPYS requests the authorities investigate these events and punish those found responsible for the attack on Zambrano.
