Kisai Mendoza was released after she agreed to delete photographs she had taken.
(IPYS/IFEX) – On 17 June 2010, “El Universal” newspaper photojournalist Kisai Mendoza and her driver, Andrés Cova, were detained by police and National Guard officers. The incident took place in Caracas’s General Cemetery.
The journalist had gone to the cemetery director’s office to obtain authorisation to take photographs of repair work that was being carried out. The authorisation was denied. As Mendoza left the office, she was detained by a security guard, members of the National Guard and officers from the Policaracas police force.
Mendoza and Cova were detained for 30 minutes. The officers asked the journalist to delete the photographs she had taken. She agreed to do so in order to be released.
IPYS condemns these types of actions as they freedom of expression and hinder the work of journalists.
