(IPYS/IFEX) – Early in the morning on 5 September 2005, vandals damaged photojournalist Leandro Nunes’s car, breaking the windows and leaving a note that said “I’ve got you”. Nunes works for “Jornal de Rondônia” newspaper. His car had been parked inside the garage at his home, in the city of Ji-Paraná, Rondonia state.
According to Nunes, who reports on police matters in the city, he had not received any threats prior to the incident. However, he does suspect certain individuals, including Ibama Prosecutor José Magalhãaes. The prosecutor, who is Nunes’s neighbour, was arrested during a police operation on 18 August. He has since been released. Nunes photographed the prosecutor while he was in prison.
Nunes submitted a complaint for the damage to his car to the Ji-Paraná First Police Division, under the direction of Officer Alexandre Árabe. As he is not certain who was behind the incident, Nunes did not denounce the incident as a threat.
