(IPYS/IFEX) – On 29 November 2004, journalist Juan Segundo Espinoza Linares was assaulted by municipal police officer Humberto Venegas Liñán. At the time of the incident, Espinoza was at Santa municipality’s public works office where he had gone to interview the assistant manager of infrastructure, Roberto Briceño Franco. The city of Santa is located in the Áncash region, northwestern Peru.
Espinoza said that Venegas Liñán approached him and, without explanation, began to push him repeatedly, forcing him out of the building. The journalist’s brother, who intervened in his defence, was also attacked by the officer.
In addition, Espinoza said that Venegas Liñán threatened to kill him, telling him that he was armed and could kill the journalist if he wanted to.
Venegas Liñán admitted to having assaulted Espinoza and his brother, but gave no explanation for his actions.
Espinoza, host and director of the radio programme “Voz y Pensamiento del Pueblo”, broadcast on Radio Nova, filed a complaint against Venegas Liñán with Santa Mayor Estuardo Díaz Delgado.
