(IPYS/IFEX) – On 10 August 2005, “Diario de São Paulo” photojournalist Wladimir de Souza was manhandled by police officer Antonio Honório while covering the questioning of a presumed drug trafficker at the civil police’s narcotics investigation department (Departamento de Narcóticos, DENARC, Policía Civil). The incident occurred after he photographed the detainee’s face while Honório was receiving the man’s statement.
The journalist told IPYS that Honório got up out of his chair in a fury as soon as De Souza took the first photo, ran at him, shoved him against the wall and destroyed his camera. Several other police officers and another journalist were present.
After the attack, Honório’s superiors offered to give De Souza a new camera if he refrained from reporting the attack.
De Souza filed a complaint about Honório at the Sao Paulo police’s complaints management division.
DENARC has refused to discuss the matter with IPYS.
