(IPYS/IFEX) – On 26 October 2006, activists of the political group “Fuerza Loretana” assaulted journalist Raúl Celis López, producer and host of the television programme “Hora Zero”, after he criticized the group’s candidate to the regional government, Iván Vásquez Valera. The event took place in Loreto, a region in northeastern Peru.
According to Celis, he was leaving the station’s headquarters when he was suddenly confronted by nearly 50 militants of the political group. They berated him for his criticisms of their candidate. Then they hit him. He sustained minor injuries.
IPYS condemns this act of aggression which limits freedom of expression, and requests that the leaders of this political group urge their supporters not to violate this right.
