(IFJ/IFEX) – On 14 February 2000, Prensa Libre, a network for the defence of press freedom and the protection of journalists in Colombia, informed IFJ of an attack on two press vehicles owned by the radio stations RCN and Radio Caracol. The attack was allegedly committed by the Carlos Alberto Buitrago group within the National Liberation Army (Ejercito de Liberacion Nacional, ELN).
The perpetrators burned the vehicles and endangered the lives of the two broadcastersâ journalists. The crime occurred in the evening of Friday 11 February, in the San Luis neighbourhood, between the municipalities of Santuario and Cocorna. The guerrillas told the people in the vehicles that the action, as well as the blockade on the highway between MedellÃn and Bogotá, was a demonstration of resistance against press controlled by the government and the army.
