The following is a 19 January 2000 news alert from the office of the second vice-president of IAPAâs Press Freedom Committee (PFC), in Argentina:
Today, media workers in Santa Cruz, Argentina denounced measures introduced by that province’s Security Ministry that would restrict freedom of expression and the right of journalists to freely disseminate information.
The provision drafted by the Santa Cruz Security Ministry constitutes a undeniable assault on the right of the media to disseminate information and the right of the public to access this information. Moreover, the new provision violates Article 13 of Statute 12.908 which guarantees “unimpeded access to all information of public interest and unimpeded access to all national, provincial, and municipal government authorities”.
The National Federation of Media Workers (Federacion de Trabajadores de Prensa de la Nacion) has issued a communique stating that it intends to pursue legal action to ensure that the current provision does not become law.
