(PERIODISTAS/IFEX) – On 23 November 2002, a Tierra del Fuego provincial legislator insulted and attempted to assault journalist Armando Cabral during the broadcast of the journalist’s programme “La Raya”, on La Isla FM radio station.
Damián Löffler, a member of parliament (MP) for the Movimiento Popular Fueguino (MPF) party, arrived at the radio station’s studios in Río Grande visibly agitated. He began to insult and threaten Cabral, and tried to assault him. When Löffler unexpectedly burst in, the journalists did not have enough time to shut off their microphones and his threats were recorded.
According to Cabral, Löffler’s anger stemmed from criticism of the MP’s administration on the radio station. On many occasions during “La Licuadora”, a programme that Cabral also produces at the radio station, MPF party members had complained about Löffler’s misconduct. The members had also spoken about plans to collect signatures in favour of his expulsion from the party.
In a press release, PERIODISTAS denounced the incident and noted that “certain minimum conditions must be followed in a law-abiding society, otherwise legal action must be taken, an avenue we would support in this particular case.”
