(IPYS/IFEX) – On the afternoon of 22 March 2006, Radio Programas del Perú journalist Rosario Coronado Sánchez was assaulted by protesters who also stole her mobile phone, personal documents and tape recorder. The event took place in the district of Tumán, Chiclayo province, in the Lambayeque region of northwestern Peru.
The assault took place as Coronado left the district police station where she had asked for information about a confrontation between the directors and workers of the Tumán sugar company. The confrontation had taken place that same morning and had led to several arrests. A group of protesters who were demanding the release of those arrested assaulted the journalist as she left the station and took her belongings.
According to Coronado, the assailants did not want the news about the confrontation to reach the media. The journalist filed an accusation with the local police.
