(IPYS/IFEX) – On 14 December 2006, journalist Juan José Ramírez Villacorta was granted a conditional release after having been imprisoned for 21 days in Huaraz, Ancash region, northwestern Peru. Ramírez works for Radio Cushin radio station and is also a correspondent for Radio Ancash station.
The decision was made by the same judge who ordered his imprisonment, Demetrio Vela Marroquín, who concluded that there was not enough evidence to link the journalist to the acts of violence perpetrated in the Huari district by a group of citizens who were dissatisfied with the results of the municipal elections of 19 November.
IPYS’s correspondent in the region was able to confirm, by looking at the photographs and video analysed by the judge, that the journalist was only covering a peaceful protest march which took place the afternoon of 19 November and did not participate in the violent demonstration that took place that evening.
The journalist will be on conditional release while the judge completes his investigation of the case.
