(IPYS/IFEX) – On the morning of 23 August 2006, two armed men shot journalist Vinicio Aguilar as he was exercising in a western neighbourhood of Guatemala City. One bullet struck his face and another struck his hand. The journalist is unaware of the motive for the attack but does not dismiss the possibility that it is related to his work as a journalist.
The journalist was able to declare to the Public Prosecutor’s Office that the when assailants approached him one said to the other: “it’s that radio guy”. They then shot him and fled on a motorcycle. Aguilar hosts a programme on political affairs on the station Radio 10. On the last programme he broadcast before the incident, on 22 August, he discussed the topic of urban violence.
The station director, Óscar Rodolfo Castañeda, stated that the station had received a series of anonymous threats, due to the radio’s coverage of a legal dispute between two of the country’s corporations.
