(IPYS/IFEX) – On 30 January 2008, journalist Alejandro Rupay, host of Radio FM 98’s programme “La Voz de Oriente”, and correspondent for INFOREGIÓN news agency, reported that he had been attacked and threatened the same day while he was broadcasting his programme live in Tingo María, Huánuco region, central Peru.
The perpetrator, Spilis Hermitaño Chuzín, brother of Governor Alisol Hermitaño Chuzín, burst into the broadcasting booth while the journalist was conducting an interview. Hermitaño is governor of the district of Mariano Dámaso Beraún. The governor’s brother hit the journalist in the face, insulted him and told him to stop irritating the governor or “worse will happen to you.” Station staff removed him from the broadcasting booth.
According to Rupay, the attack was likely in retaliation for comments he had made in the course of his programme the week prior about complaints implicating the district governor in alleged acts of corruption and the misuse of municipal funds.
