The hosts of "Huaraz Noticias en Radio" suspect that both the mayor of Huaraz and the Ancash Regional President are behind the suspension of their news programme.
On 15 May 2013, the news program “Huaraz Noticias en Radio”, broadcast by radio Alpamayo in Huaraz, and presented and directed by Gudelia Armida Gálvez Tafur and Rosa Roque Díaz, was unexpectedly taken off the air. This took place in the Ancash region of northeastern Peru.
The radio journalists told IPYS that the radio station’s owners, the evangelist group Vid Verdadera, simply prevented them from broadcasting their news program, which had been on the air for three years, saying it had been canceled and claiming that the graffiti that appears every morning against them damages the institution’s image.
The journalists had been criticizing the administration of the regional president César Álvarez Gálvez and the provincial mayor Vladimir Meza Villarreal. Coincidentally, in recent weeks the two journalists had been threatened and graffiti has appeared in various parts of the city insulting them.
Gudelia Armida Gálvez Tafur has already suffered attacks because of her work as a journalist. She reported them to IPYS last April when she was the victim of a physical attack, death threats and more graffiti against her.
Gálvez and Roque suspect that both the mayor of Huaraz and the Ancash Regional President are behind the suspension of their news program, which was broadcast from Monday to Saturday in the morning.
