(IFJ/IFEX) – The radio show Live News (Noticias en Directo), which broadcasted via Radio Karibeña in the city of Iquitos, was cancelled against the wishes of director and announcer Fernando Vásquez Barbarán.
The show was pulled on Monday 17 January 2000, after owners of the radio station decided that Vásquez Barbarán was too independent, and overly critical of the current government.
Vásquez Barbarán dedicated five minutes of every hour of Live News to broadcasting from different areas around the city, during which time he would often denounce corruption in government offices and solicit the public’s opinion.
Several different journalist organisations in Iquitos, Loreto region, have spoken out about this incident, declaring it an assault on the press and freedom of expression.
