(IFJ/IFEX) – Unknown assailants put a bomb in the doorway of Radio JunÃnâs studio, causing material damages to the broadcasting stationâs entrance and waiting room. The attack against the studio, which is located at 670 José Olaya Street in the province of JunÃn, took place at 11:50 p.m. (local time) on Sunday 5 March 2000. Three people with covered faces were seen fleeing the area after placing the bomb.
Jacinto Figueroa Yauri, manager of Radio JunÃn, filed a complaint about the incident with the JunÃn police and the Peruvian Attorney Generalâs office. He has also requested protection guarantees for himself, his family and the radio stationâs employees.
He reported to the Journalistsâ Human Rights office of the IFJâs Human rights section for Latin America that at the end of February and beginning of March the station received a series of threatening phone calls, announcing that “Radio JunÃn is being watched”. On Sunday 5 March, at 11:00 p.m., they received another call from a woman who refused to identify herself and asked to speak to the radio stationâs employees.
Figueroa noted that the threats began after 23 February, when the programme Las noticias en Radio JunÃn reported on events related to the general strike called by the JunÃn Defence Committee, which is calling for public works to be constructed for the general population using funds received from hydro-electric fees, among other things. The broadcast voiced criticisms of the management of government affairs.
