(IFJ/IFEX) – At dawn on Tuesday 8 May 2001, an unidentified individual broke into the studios of the FM INOLVIDABLE radio station, in the city of Caleta Oliva, Santa Cruz, Argentina. The intruder sprayed the transmission equipment with kerosene and set it on fire, according to information received by the Journalist’s Human Rights Office from Gustavo Granero, secretary-general of the Santa Cruz Press Union.
When he found out about the incident, Antonio Barría, businessman, journalist and the radio station’s owner, told the governmental agency TELAM that this was the fourth time the station has been targeted as a result of investigations into drug trafficking at the Caleta Oliva harbour and the smuggling of automobiles.
Police sources stated that the damage was discovered at 6:00 a.m. (local time) by the station’s employees. As they arrived at the station to begin that day’s broadcast, they found that a great part of the interior had been burned.
According to Ana Junco, announcer for FM INOLVIDABLE, the police was able to ascertain “that an individual came in through the bathroom window and from there entered the studio, proceeding to douse the transmission equipment and a set of armchairs with kerosene.”
