(IPYS/IFEX) – On 26 August 2006, Adrián Salazar, a photo-journalist for “Nueva Prensa del Oriente” daily newspaper, was beaten and insulted by two policemen of the municipality of Simón Rodríguez, in the state of Anzoátegui, eastern Venezuela. Salazar does not know why he was attacked, although he does not rule out that it may be because of his work as a journalist.
Salazar was arriving home when he was stopped by two officers in a municipal police car. The policemen attempted to force Salazar into the vehicle without asking him for any identification or explaining the motives behind their action. When the journalist resisted, he was assaulted. He only managed to escape when a passerby came to his aid.
On 30 August he made a statement on the incident at the Municipal Police headquarters. Police Chief José Acosta Millán reported that the assailants were suspended from service and that administrative proceedings have been initiated against them.
IPYS will continue investigating in order to establish the motives for the attack.
