Bill increasing penalties for insult and calumny offences shelved
The Senate’s First Commission has shelved the legislative bill that would have broadened the definition of insult and defamation offences committed by journalists and media outlet directors. This means that the bill, originally presented by Senator Juan Gómez Martínez in 2003, will no longer be considered by the legislators.
In December 2005 Senator Mauricio Pimiento Barrera, originally one of the supporters of the bill, spoke against it. One month prior, FLIP and the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) had met with Pimiento to explain their concerns and objections to the bill.
