(IPYS-Venezuela/IFEX) – On Thursday 1 November at 5:00 a.m. a group of men fired gunshots against the office of El Regional del Zulia newspaper located in the city of Maracaibo. The main office of the newspaper is in Ciudad Ojeda, Lagunillas Municipality in the state of Zulia, western Venezuela.
Yuli Peña, head of the regional office, told IPYS-Venezuela that the security officer said he heard two explosions and then realized that a bullet had hit the glass of the security office.
“We thought it was something fortuitous, we have never received any kind of threat or had any problems with anyone,” she was quoted as saying.
Peña also said that a squad of the Scientific Police, as well as the SEBIN (National Intelligence) and the regional police of the state of Zulia inspected the area and questioned the security officers. They also took copies of the surveillance cameras to analyse them. Peña also said that the regional office of the paper is located in Santa Rita avenue, which is filled with night clubs. “It may have just been someone drunk, but the state police must determine what really happened,” Peña said.
