(IPYS/IFEX) – On 21 September 2009, a live broadcast by the Ecuavisa television station was disrupted by a group of students from the Simón Bolívar school. The students were supporting a demonstration against the government organised by teachers who belong to the National Teachers’ Union (UNE) in Guayaquil.
Journalist Tiron Lino was reporting live on the actions of the students as they threw stones at vehicles that were passing by the school when they cut a cable connecting the television station’s camera to other equipment.
The students also threw stones at the news team, as well as at camera operators and photographers from other media outlets. They damaged equipment owned by the media and vehicles belonging to both the police and private individuals. No one was injured as a result of the students’ actions.
The teachers were demanding better salaries, among other things.
