The court's ruling paves the way for the Venezuelan authorities to begin proceedings before the United States justice system to obtain the extradition of Guillermo Zuloaga Núñez.
(IPYS-Venezuela/IFEX) – On 17 August 2010, the Criminal Division of the Supreme Court of Justice allowed an extradition request to proceed against Guillermo Zuloaga Núñez, president of the privately-owned Globovisión television network, and his son, Guillermo Zuloaga Siso. The request had been presented by the Public Prosecutor’s Office on 29 June.
Zuloaga Núñez and his son have been accused of the crime of usury and are alleged to have been involved in irregularities relating to the storage of vehicles at one of their residences. With the Supreme Court ruling, which was issued by Magistrate Eladio Ramón Aponte, the Venezuelan authorities can begin proceedings before the United States justice system to obtain the extradition of the two men.
The Public Prosecutor’s Office had previously issued a warrant for the arrest of Zuloaga Núñez and his son. In addition, on 18 June Foreign Affairs and Justice Minister Tareck El Aissami announced that INTERPOL had issued an international arrest warrant against both men.
IPYS-Venezuela will continue to monitor this case and hopes that the Supreme Court decision was not influenced by political interests.
