(IPYS/IFEX) – On 21 March 2006, the editor-in-chief of the webpage En Línea Directa (http://www.enlineadirecta.info), Arturo Solís, received a telephoned threat from the press officer of the Tamaulipas State Public Prosecutor’s Office, Raúl Ramírez.
The threat stemmed from a 16 March column in which Solís asked the state governor, Eugenio Hernández Flores, to replace Prosecutor Mercedes del Carmen Guillén. In the column, Solís stated that Guillén has proven incapable of fighting crime in the region, and has allowed people with criminal records to work in her office.
According to En Línea Directa, Ramírez warned Solís that if he did not stop publishing news items about the Public Prosecutor he would face consequences. The journalist stated that he would continue reporting on this issue.
Tamaulipas, located along the country’s northern border, is one of the country’s most dangerous states for journalists. According to Reporters Without Borders (RSF), six journalists have been murdered in the area since 2000.
