(IPYS/IFEX) – On 17 August 2006, a Globovisión television station cameraman and his assistant were detained by members of the Military Police at Checkpoint 1 of the military facilities at Fuerte Tiuna, in Caracas, as they were leaving the premises in one of the station’s cars, after being denied access to a hearing in the Army Prosecutor’s offices. The guards only allowed them to leave when the reporter informed the television station, which immediately started broadcasting the situation live. According to Globovisión, the reporters had asked for permission to cover the hearing.
They had been able to get into the Prosecutor’s offices, inside the military facility, but decided to go back to the television station when they were denied access to the hearing. Military personnel detained them at the exit checkpoint for 15 minutes without any explanations. They asked for the journalists’ identification documents as well as the car’s registration documents. It must be noted that a few hours later, other journalists from the same television channel were allowed to cover the hearing. They entered the military facility in a car which did not have the station’s logo.
Globovisión’s editorial position is critical of the country’s government.
