On Monday 7 February 2000, unknown assailants broke into the offices of Channel 10 (Canal 10) television station, a subsidiary of Global Television, which is located on the Coca passageway in Huaral, north of Lima. They stole expensive transmitting equipment, as well as cash and receipts for payments to the National Taxation Supervisory Office (Superintendencia Nacional de Administracion Tributaria, SUNAT).
The Friday 4 February edition of “La República” newspaper reported that the mysterious robbery occurred in the early morning, the day before the investigative programme Direct Contact (Contacto Directo) was re-launched. The Radio FM 98 station is located in an adjacent section of the same building, however, although it was accessible to the robbers, oddly enough it was not looted.
The assailants committed their crime without leaving any evidence of their motives. They entered the three-floor property via a rear wall. They were thus able to make their way to the television station’s office without rousing suspicion. A few hours earlier, the station’s owners, journalists and employees had all gone out to a costume party for the Virgin of Candlemas feast.
According to the evidence, the robbers broke the locks on the office doors and stole a television transmission antenna, valued at more than US$5,000, two colour televisions, five video recorders, a movie camera, recorders, copies of invoices for payments to SUNAT, US$400 and 1,200 soles (approx. US$352) in cash.
The station’s owner, Crisostomo Pajuelo Martínez, filed a report with the Huaral police.
