A serious conflict has recently developed at Argentinaâs only public and state television station, Argentina Televisora Color, as a consequence of the firing of fifty-three journalists, cameramen, producers and editors of the stationâs news programme (out of a total of 104 workers).
The workers have remained on the stationâs grounds since Saturday 4 March 2000 and the authorities have threatened to evict them using the police force.
Between 1995 and 1999, the journalists, together with large sectors of society, carried out protests and prevented the only state channel from being sold to private companies by the previous government. They fear that the current situation may be linked to a renewed attempt to privatise the television channel.
