When IFEX decided to take on the issue of impunity as a network-wide campaign, our first challenge was a troubling lack of awareness of both the extent of this problem and its impact on free expression.
Over the past few years, our members have been at the forefront of efforts to draw attention to this issue at the local, national and international levels. This year there was tremendous participation from IFEX members as well as individuals around the world, global media coverage and substantial social media buzz, all of which helped to shine a spotlight on the problem of impunity and encourage people to take action.
The campaign featured specific actions in support of five individuals who have been targeted for exercising their right to free expression – Yorm Bopha, from Cambodia; Eren Keskin, from Turkey; Doaa Eladl, from Egypt; Martín Pallares, from Ecuador; and Rommy Mom, from Nigeria.
Just a few days after the end of this year’s campaign, we were delighted to report that the Third Committee of the United Nations General Assembly voted to make 2 November the International Day to End Impunity for crimes against journalists. IFEX members played no small part in the process that led to this decision, and we can now look forward to broadening the campaign’s reach and strengthening its impact even more in 2014.
