(IPYS/IFEX) – Early in the morning of 8 February 2008, a group of unidentified men fired five times into the home of journalist John Isuiza Inauma. The bullets hit a vehicle stored by Isuiza Inauma in the living room, which prevented them from reaching the journalist’s wife and children. Isuiza, host of a radio programme on MBR radio, was not home at the time of the shooting. The incident took place in the city of Yurimaguas, Alto Amazonas province, northeastern Perú.
Isuiza later found pamphlets on the sidewalk opposite his house, containing death threats against him and two of his colleagues: freelancer Rodolfo Isla Castillo, and Julio César Mendoza Escobar, of the radio station Radio Candela.
Isla Castillo believes the threats and attack may be related to the journalists’ critical reporting on corruption. The journalists had alleged the complicity in acts of corruption of Héctor Hidalgo, mayor of Alto Amazonas province, Iván Vásquez Valera, regional president of Loreto, and the director of Yurimaguas’s Santa Gema Hospital.
