(OLPEC/IFEX) – 3 May 2010 – Tunisians will spend World Press Freedom Day in mourning this year, says press freedom group OLPEC. Though one of the first countries in the region to enjoy a relatively unfettered media in the 80s, Tunisia has witnessed an historic backslide in press freedom since that time, according to the press freedom group.
For the past 23 years since President Ben Ali came to power, Tunisians have watched their right to express themselves freely diminish year after year. An all out war has been declared on the free media by the government.
In marking World Press Freedom Day, OLPEC notes that this 3 May will be no different those that preceded it as long as Tunisia continues to mourn its freedom.
