(IPYS/IFEX) – On 13 August 2008, “Al Día” journalist Ever Peña, was threatened with murder by Sonia Suárez Aliaga, the person in charge of the Municipality of Pillco Marca’s warehouse, in the province of Andabamba, Huánuco region, in central Peru. The event took place when the journalist went to the municipality to cover the protest of a group of local residents who were asking for some machinery the mayor, Isabel Dávila, had offered them in order to build a quarry.
When she saw the journalist, Suárez shouted at him that if he ever came back to the municipality its workers would lynch him. She issued her threat in front of the governor, Jhon Cruz Bravo, who has taken actions to ensure the journalist is protected.
After the incident, the journalist was about to interview local residents of the area in the municipality’s sports facility when Rufo Valderrama Saldívar, its caretaker, who is also a municipal employee, charged at him on a motorbike. This incident was witnessed by local residents and other authorities who protested against the municipal worker’s attitude.
A complaint was filed against Rufo Valderrama at the police station in Pillco Marca. When the mayor was asked about her employees’ actions, she refused to reply.
