(C-Libre/IFEX) – Sometime between the night of 5 September 2009 and the morning of 7 September, unidentified individuals broke into the C-Libre offices after destroying part of the office building’s roof. The break-in was probably intended as an intimidation tactic, since no objects of value were taken. The office was searched and the locks on three desks were forced open in the area where the online newspaper http://www.Conexihon.com is produced.
Upon arriving at work on the morning of 7 September, the C-Libre personnel realised that the drawers on the desks had been broken into and searched.
According to several people who reside nearby, security guards in the area told them that on 6 September they heard strange noises coming from the C-Libre offices. They fired their guns in order to scare off the delinquents.
This incident took place in the context of the political crisis that has followed on the heels of the 28 June coup d’etat in Honduras. Multiple violations of freedom of expression have taken place since the coup and have been documented and denounced by C-Libre, both internationally and within Honduras.
C-Libre notes that this is the first time since the organisation’s beginning that their offices have been broken into. This fact begs attention since the incident took place precisely at a time when the de facto regime that took power after the coup has systematically taken action against media outlets and independent journalists.
