In the city of San Pedro Sula, Cortés department, on 24 June 2013, unknown assailants kidnapped journalist and university professor Aníbal Barrow, host of the news programme “Aníbal Barrow y nada más” (“Aníbal Barrow and nothing more”), broadcast on Globo TV from 7 to 8 a.m. Monday to Friday.
As one source told C-Libre, Barrow had been driving with one of his sons and his daughter-in-law, when some unidentified individuals forced them to stop their car, forced Barrow’s relatives out of the vehicle, and later took the journalist towards a southern route out of the city.
Barrow had been a journalist for “Foro Dominical” on state television during the administration of José Manuel Zelaya Rosales.
On the day of the kidnapping, Barrow had invited presidential candidate from the Libertad y Refundación (LIBRE) party and labour leader Juan Barahona on his programme. Barahona had spoken about the upcoming fourth anniversary of the 2009 coup d’état, which ousted Zelaya from office.
Due to an order from the Secretary of State in the Ministry of Security, Arturo Corrales, effective 2 May 2013, the Honduran police are not authorised to provide any more information about the incident before an official press release is issued by the local government public relations office.
