(IPYS/IFEX) – On the afternoon of 28 July 2004, a Venezolana de Televisión station news crew was attacked by opposition party supporters near the Plaza El Indio in Chacao municipality, eastern Caracas.
Journalist Grecia Pineda, her camera operator and a camera assistant were conducting a survey at a ruling party booth as part of the coverage of President Hugo Chávez’s birthday. As the news crew was leaving the booth, an opposition party supporter began to insult the journalist and challenged the camera assistant to a fight. Pineda said that the individual did not identify himself.
After trying to stop the camera operator from carrying out his work, the assailant attacked the camera assistant. Pineda was knocked down during the attack and struck on the shoulder. Opposition and ruling party supporters finally managed to remove the assailant from the scene of the incident.
