Journalist Yanina Romero, from the Women’s Rights Centre in San Pedro Sula, Cortés, reported to C-Libre that she has been the victim of threats via text message on a day she had participated in a TV programme discussing the problems of insecurity and vulnerability for journalists.
Journalist Yanina Romero, from the Women’s Rights Centre (Centro de Derechos de la Mujer, CDM) in San Pedro Sula, Cortés, reported to C-Libre that she has been the victim of threats via text message, which were sent using an online web platform owned by the TIGO-Honduras company.
The person sending the threats goes by “antifem”, and sent messages alluding to Romero’s work for CDM of promoting and defending women’s rights. One of the texts read: “Inside you’re fragile and vulnerable … Your arrogance will not stop the heavy storms that await you”.
According to Romero the threats were sent on 12 December 2013, just after she finished her radio programme that airs from 6 to 7 p.m. on Radio El Mundo. “I saw the messages at 10 p.m. when my daughter was looking at my phone and told me I had some unread messages. They were received at 8:49 p.m.,” said Romero.
She also said that on the same day she had participated in a TV programme run by her colleague, Alfredo Bográn, where she talked about the problems of insecurity and vulnerability for journalists.
Romero has asked the Human Rights Prosecutor to act on its own initiative and investigate the location of the server where the threatening messages were sent from.
