(WiPC/IFEX) – The following is a correction to the WiPC Cuba alert issued on 17 January 2002. WiPC regrets the error:
Contrary to the information contained in a WiPC Cuba alert issued on the IFEX network on 17 January 2002, WiPC of International PEN regrets to report that Bernardo Arévalo Padron continues to serve his six-year sentence handed down in 1997 on charges of having produced “enemy propaganda”.
WiPC issued the original report having received rumours concerning the journalist’s release, which were confirmed by reliable sources within Cuba. Unfortunately, despite their best intentions, it has since become clear that these sources were themselves the victims of misinformation.
WiPC apologises for unwittingly having given the rumours credence. The organisation also takes this opportunity to call upon the Cuban government to release Bernardo Arévalo Padron. The journalist became eligible for conditional release in October 2001, having served half his sentence.
