Journalists threatened
Leaders of the Chattra Shibir, student wing of the fundamentalist group Jamat-e Islami, have threatened journalists in an open statement. They said, “You, the journalists, have written enough against us. Now it is our time. Stop writing.” This open threat was delivered by Shafiqul Islam, secretary-general of the Chattra Shibir, at Rajshahi University.
On 10 October 2001, the Chattra Shibir organised a meeting near the university’s library square. In an open statement, Islam threatened all journalist who work on the campus. He said, “Now your [journalists] time is up. [Drop] your pens, otherwise you will face the consequences.” The Chattra Shibir leader issued his threat on the same evening as the newly-elected government took its oath of office. Jamat-e Islami is a partner of the new government and has been given two seats in cabinet.
