(NDIMA/IFEX) – Daniel Mjema, a journalist from the Kiswahili language daily “Majira” and a member of the Association of Journalists and Media Workers’ Executive Committee, has been threatened with being re-arrested and facing trumped-up charges, brought against him by Kilimanjaro Regional Police Commander (RPC) Mohammed Chico. On 23 July 2001, Mjema was arrested by three policemen who took him to Chico’s office, where he was beaten up.
The journalist was beaten after filing a story in which he said that the commander and Inspector General of Police (IGP) Omar Mahita had attended a wedding of one of Jafar Abubakar’s relatives. Abubakar is a businessman who is facing charges for lynching a driver who was a Haria Hotel employee.
